Sustainability
Sustainability is not an add‑on at Interalu. It is a long‑term commitment that guides how we design, produce and collaborate. From circular construction principles to responsible material choices, we focus on solutions that deliver measurable impact today and remain relevant for decades to come.
Our vision
We believe buildings should be sustainable by design. That means reducing environmental impact across the full life cycle of our climate ceilings—while maintaining comfort, performance and architectural freedom. Our approach combines long product lifespans, reuse and transparency to support future‑proof construction.
Circular construction, by design
Interalu climate ceilings are developed with a lifespan exceeding 50 years. They are modular, demountable and reusable, allowing ceilings to be relocated or adapted when buildings change function—without generating waste. This flexibility preserves material value and reduces the need for new production.
Our key principles:
- Long lifespan and adaptability
- Designed for reuse and relocation
- Minimal material loss during changes
- Reduced waste over the building life cycle
Responsible materials & sourcing
We make conscious choices in materials and suppliers to limit environmental impact while safeguarding quality.
What we do today:
- Prefer local Belgian suppliers where possible; otherwise European partners
- Steel with at least 15% recycled content
- Clips with 37% post‑industrial recyclate
- Ongoing research into introducing recyclate in PE‑RT piping
Every step is assessed across the full life cycle, acknowledging that recycling itself also has an environmental footprint.
Measurable CO₂ impact
Transparency matters. We quantify emissions to focus improvement efforts where impact is highest.
Local production (Wilrijk – 2021)
- Scope 1: 88.25 t CO₂ eq
- Scope 2: 109.60 t CO₂ eq
Local production represents ±2% of the total CO₂ footprint of our climate‑control ceilings. The largest share is linked to steel production—where collaboration and innovation make the biggest difference.
Why we consciously choose steel
Choosing steel is not only a technical decision, but a sustainability choice — one that supports circular construction, long product lifespans and responsible material use.
Steel is a deliberate and well‑considered material choice at Interalu. Compared to other metals such as copper, steel offers clear advantages in terms of durability, reliability and circularity — all essential for long‑lasting, sustainable building solutions.
Unlike copper, steel does not oxidise in a way that affects performance over time. This reduces the risk of malfunction, repairs or complex maintenance later in the building’s life cycle. By combining steel ceilings with PE‑RT piping, we avoid material degradation and long‑term costs often associated with copper systems
Steel is also fully recyclable. In combination with Interalu’s glue‑free click system, this enables complete disassembly of the ceiling without damaging materials. Panels, profiles, clips and piping can all be removed and reused, supporting a waste‑free approach across multiple life cycles.
